Introduction

Why Sourdough Baking is a Great Addition

to a Healthy Lifestyle

Sourdough baking is the ancient way of making bread and baked goods using gluten-containing flours (usually wheat, rye, spelt, or einkorn).  It uses a sourdough starter, which contains naturally occurring yeasts and bacterias, to gently ferment the dough and cause it to rise.

This fermentation and rising process takes place over several hours and produces many beneficial effects.  First, it breaks down the gluten in the flour making it more easily digestible.  Second, it makes the vitamins and minerals in the flour more bio-available.  Finally, it reduces the carbohydrate count of the bread leading to a bread that does not cause a rapid rise in blood sugar!

Sourdough baking is also a very inexpensive way of baking because it uses simple ingredients easily found at all grocery stores.  There is no need to invest in special alternative flours.  A homemade loaf of sourdough bread costs less than $1.  This is much cheaper than store-bought sourdough bread which often costs $5/loaf!

Sourdough baking is also very family-friendly. Most people enjoy bread and other baked goods made with a sourdough starter.  These baked goods have a familiar taste and texture making them an easy transition to healthier eating.

Many people think sourdough baking is difficult and time-consuming.  Some bakers treat sourdough baking as an art form and therefore spend much time and effort to ensure a beautiful and perfect result.  However, it doesn’t have to be this way.  You can get yummy, fine-looking baked goods easily!

The nature of sourdough baking requires a long-ferment time.  However, if you choose the right recipe (and method), most of this time is spent letting the dough sit.  The actual hands-on time can be very minimal!

Caring for and regularly baking with a sourdough starter gives a rhythm to your time in the kitchen.  Learning to care for and bake with a sourdough starter is also a great chore to give to a child.  And if you need to, taking a vacation from sourdough is also super easy!

My Journey to Sourdough Baking

Ten years ago I tried making sourdough bread for the first time.  After several tries produced nothing but bricks, I gave up.  However, after almost 6 years as a Trim Healthy Mama, I wanted “real” pizza crust again!  I put it off for a while because I didn’t think I had the mental bandwidth to dive in and figure it out.  But then, something pushed me over the edge.  And that something was a video!  In only about a week, I made my first successful loaf of sourdough bread!

Having my own personal tutor (through a video course) was a great way to learn sourdough baking, but I still had to adapt recipes and figure out how to make it work for my Trim Healthy Mama lifestyle.  (This means using whole grain flours and a traditional long-ferment time.) And I still had to figure out how to make sourdough quick and easy enough to make it sustainable as a part of my busy homeschool mom life.

I’ve spent over two years practicing my sourdough skills and developing time saving techniques.  I couldn’t be happier with the results, and now I’m ready to teach you!

So, whether you follow the Trim Healthy Mama lifestyle, or you just want healthy sourdough baked goods made in an easy way, this course is for you!
